Health and safety are a primary concern in almost any work place. Although workplace safety procedures vary from place to place, there are certain universal health and safety guidelines that you should follow. I have been a health safety compliance expert for years, and have studied this in detail. The thing that matters most isn't whether this or that rule is in place, but whether there is a culture of safety in the workplace. If safety and health guidelines are respected and put above everything else, people won't get hurt. If, on the other hand, people take a lax attitude towards environmental safety, accidents will happen – sometimes with tragic results.

The most important thing is to keep health safety guidelines in the forefront of company concerns. This means that you don't only deal with health and safety issues once a year when you are getting accreditation reviews by the government. You have to deal with it all the time. If you have a large enough company to afford it, you should appoint a workplace safety expert. If you don't, you can add it on as a peripheral to someone's job description. Take one of your other workers who wants to make some extra money and offer to appoint him safety and health compliance chair in exchange for a bonus. Many workers will jump at the chance.

Make sure that every month or so, you have a meeting that deals with health and safety issues. It doesn't matter exactly how often you do it, as long as you do it regularly. In some workplaces, you have to deal with issues of safety almost every week. In other workplaces, once every other month is probably good enough. The most important thing is to schedule it and post it and allow other workers to voice their concerns at the meeting. That way, you can start to develop a culture of workplace health & safety.

Most importantly, make sure that you post health and safety rules around the workplace. Whether you train your workers once or you train them a hundred times, someone will forget the guidelines at some point. Rather than berating your workers for being forgetful, make sure that they always have access to the guidelines. Put them in a place where everyone can see them and periodically quiz workers on them. Everyone should know the rules, whether it is food safety or proper maintenance and operation of machines. It could save a life.

After cancer treatment health tips everyone needs to know

If you or someone you know has a history of cancer, it is important to be aware of the potential health consequences from cancer and its treatment. Frequently, patients and families are not informed or do not recall discussions that occurred during the stress-filled days after diagnosis about such potential problems as pain, depression, infertility and other physical and emotional changes. Regardless of whether problems are temporary or permanent, most can be managed.

To begin to address the many and varied health-related needs of long-term cancer survivors, the American Journal of Nursing (AJN) recently released a report, based on a July 2005 symposium, that offers action strategies and recommendations.

"The late effects of cancer and treatment for survivors diagnosed as adults remain poorly documented," said Pamela J. Haylock, MA, RN, symposium co-director, cancer care consultant and doctoral student at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing in Galveston, TX. "Yet up to 75 percent of survivors have some health deficits related to their cancers and therapies. Knowing about potential risks and learning and using risk reduction strategies are important steps in survivors' recovery."

Nurses recommend that cancer survivors heed the following advice:

• Incorporate regular exercise, stress management, a healthful diet and weight control as part of a healthy lifestyle.

• Schedule regular health checkups.

• Ask your oncology team for a written summary of your cancer diagnosis, treatments, tests and recommended follow-up once treatment is complete. Create a folder to organize diagnostic and laboratory reports, and give it to your current health care provider to make a copy for his or her records.

• Ask your nurse or physician to help you and your caregivers learn about possible long-term effects of your cancer therapy and ways to prevent or minimize them. Effects differ from person to person; therefore, educating yourself is important.

• Inform physicians and nurses about your previous cancer history, treatment, current medications and long-term effects you may experience, including infertility, early menopause, indigestion, dry mouth or taste changes, constipation, diarrhea, sleep issues, fatigue, dry skin, memory loss, changes in thinking, vision or hearing problems, depression, relationship/sexuality issues, anxiety, confidence issues, pain, tingling, or numbness or swelling in the fingers and toes.

• Look for resources to assist with any physical, emotional or financial issues that you may experience.

Coin collection the art of numismatics

The first known coin collector was Petrarch, who lived way back in the 15th century. A century later, Hubert Goltz visited a number of coin collectors throughout Europe and estimated that were approximately 960 collections in total. Numismatics gradually became a favorite hobby of royalty. Francis I of Austria wrote about his collection of gold coins in 1756. The British Museum established one of the first coin catalogues. From this have emerged more than 100 publications devoted to coin collecting.

Today the word coin refers to standard issue, commemorative or presentation pieces duly authorized by the federal mint. This excludes coins privately minted coins. The most common substances used in making coins are gold, silver, copper and nickel. Alloys, such as copper and nickel, are also used to produce coins, such as the US 25 cent piece, that are less expensive to produce than single metal coins.

There are many different types of coins for collecting. One can collect a specific denomination by date of issue, country of issue, mink mark, proof sets, uncirculated condition, metal content, design or mint errors. It is ultimately up to the collector to decide what to collect.

Once the collector has decided on which area to collect, it’s time to get started. One area that is common today is the US state quarter. They are found frequently in pocket change. Commercial booklets are available to store the quarters. If a collector just wants all 50 state quarters, they are relatively easy to find. Because so many have been issued, the value of circulated coins is low. Coins in circulation get nicked, scratched and otherwise worn. To have a collection that will increase in value over time, a collector should consider uncirculated mint coins. These are generally available when a coin is first released and are not worn in any way. Their value is higher than coins in circulation.

Coins issued in different metals than the regular issues are also collectible. Prior to World War Two, pennies were minted in copper. When copper was needed in America’s war industries and could not be spared for coinage, the government authorized the use of steel to produce pennies. After the war, copper was again used to produce pennies, enhancing the value of the steel pennies. Today, it costs more than a penny of copper to make a penny.

Congress is exploring the use of other metals to make pennies. Should this occur, the last copper pennies would increase in value, as would the new pennies. Design changes can also affect the value of a penny. For many years, pennies with wheat designs on the reverse side were issued. The design was changed, thus increasing the value of the old design. A word of caution: all coin values are based upon the availability of the coins and their condition. Coins that are readily available or worn may increase in value over time, but not as much as mint, uncirculated varieties.

There are many places that a coin collector can go to find coins. There are coin clubs, dealers, online and on television auction sites, and even companies that specialize in mail order purchases. You don’t have to be rich to be a coin collector. Choose your area of specialty and then jump in.

I can't help but love that quote. When I was a kid, my grandpa always called any store bought cookies that somehow made it into the house "Commie cookies." For him, it was Grandma's homemade cookies or none at all.

There's just something special about homemade cookies, especially chocolate chip cookies, so far as I'm concerned. It's a great family activity, something even children can help with, and everyone loves eating the results.

Here's an easy recipe for chocolate chip cookies I think you'll enjoy:

Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 package butter pecan, chocolate chip, chocolate fudge, devil's food, German, chocolate or yellow cake mix

1/2 cup butter or margarine -- softened

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 eggs

1/2 cup chopped nuts

1 (6 ounce) package semisweet chocolate chips (1 cup)

Heat oven to 350є. Combine half of the dry cake mix , butter, vanilla and eggs in large bowl and mix until smooth. Stir in remaining cake mix, nuts and chocolate chips.

Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until edges are set (centers will be soft). Cool 1 minute; remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.

Making heavenly vanilla soap using the melt and pour process

Have you ever been to a beauty shop and smelled the aroma of absolutely gorgeous hand-made soap and thought to yourself, “I wish I could do something like this”? Well, the good news is that you can, with the right tools, know-how and imagination.

So why should you make your own soap? Not only is it fun and exciting, but you get to put exactly what you want in it, design it how you like and choose the colors and fragrance as well. Some store-bought soaps can be full of chemicals that can be harmful to the skin, but if you make your own you know exactly what is in it.

What is the melt and pour process? The melt and pour process is exactly how it sounds. You use ready-made blocks of soap that are uncolored and unscented and you melt the soap blocks. Then you add your own colors, fragrances and/or other additives, pour it in a mold and wait until it’s set. Melt and pour soap bases are available from online soap suppliers or craft stores. One of the advantages of using the melt and pour process to make soap is that you don’t have to deal with potentially dangerous lye.

The equipment you will need will depend entirely on the soap that you are creating. You’ll need either a double boiler or sturdy heat resistant microwave bowl or jug to melt the soap in and a base or mold for the shape of the soap. Also, a couple of whisks or spoons and a set of measuring spoons for additives. These are the basic tools you’ll need and then you can add absolutely anything you want from there on.

Before you start, it is good to bear in mind that the soap can be extremely hot when it has been melted, so it is best to be very careful. If you’re using the microwave, make sure you wear protective gloves and use a sturdy potholder to take out the microwave bowl or jug containing the hot melted soap. It’s also a good idea to wear gloves if you’re melting it in a double boiler, in case you accidentally splash. And make sure you’re not disturbed by children or pets.

Now let’s try out a basic melt and pour soap recipe called Heavenly Vanilla.

In order to make this you’re going to need the following equipment:

Clean cutting board

Double boiler or sturdy heat resistant microwave bowl or jug, eg Pyrex

Scales (to measure soap)

4 oz or 113 grams of good quality white melt and pour soap base

Vanilla fragrance suitable for soap making

Clean metal whisk or spoon

Clean measuring spoons

Clean 3-4 oz basic soap mold

Rubbing alcohol in spray bottle

Protective gloves

Safety goggles

Protective clothes

Protective shoes

Now you have everything you need, so let’s move on to the exciting part, making your own soap!

After you’ve put on the safety goggles, protective gloves, clothes and shoes, you can first measure the fragrance and set it aside. Start off using 0.25 ounce of fragrance per pound of soap; you can make it stronger or weaker from there. So for this recipe you would use 1.9 ml or 0.06 oz or 1/4 +1/8 US teaspoons of fragrance.

Next, weigh the soap base and melt 4 oz in either a double boiler or in the microwave. If melting it in the microwave, cover the container with Saran wrap to stop the soap from drying out. Melt the soap in one minute increments in the microwave. Stir after every minute while being careful of the hot soap base.

Once it’s totally melted, it’s time to add the vanilla fragrance that you’ve already measured and set aside. Add it slowly and stir carefully and gently. If you get bubbles at this stage it means you’ve stirred it too hard.

Now you’re ready to pour it into the mold. Pour it very slowly and gently. Avoid splashing. If you get bubbles pouring it into the mold, spritz the surface of the soap in the mold lightly with rubbing alcohol.

Now put the mold in a safe place and leave it for a few hours. If you’re in a hurry, you can put it in the refrigerator (not the freezer) for about an hour until it’s set.

Once the soap is set (hardened), it’s time to unmold it. Unmolding soap is just like unmolding a cake from a cake tin. Gently tap the mold then see if the soap pops out. If it doesn’t it may need a further tap. If the soap is really stubborn, trying running some warm water over the bottom of the mold.

You can now use your Heavenly Vanilla soap right away!

** Serving areas will be sufficient to ensure that every student has access to meals with a minimum of waiting time, so that they have plenty of time to eat before their next class.

** The staff and administration of the school, AND the students and parents will analyze the current environment, working together to create a space that matches the needs of all parties.

Nutritional Concerns Regarding Meals and Foods

** Meals should comply with USDA nutritional standards and guidelines, and students should have plenty of food choices, with new foods introduced to keep the menu interesting and healthy.

** Food preparation and preferences should be varied enough to comply with various tastes and ethnic preferences or religious requirements.

** Additional food and drink offered, over and above meals served, e. g. vending machines and packaged ‘snacks’, will represent the 5 major food groups in the Food Guide Pyramid.

**Students must have designated lunch periods, long enough for them to get their food and eat at a healthy pace.

** Lunch periods should be as close to the middle of the day as possible and should allow time for socialization and a relaxed eating pace.

** All decisions made by the school system regarding the type, variety and quantity of food and drink to be sold in the school will be based on nutritional goals and sound guidelines, NOT on the profit the school can make.

Nutrition and Health Focused Curriculum

** Kindergarten through Grade 12 classes should include education and information on healthy eating habits and the types of foods a child should eat to stay healthy and help them grow.

The economic health of a country will strongly influence its stock market. When the economy is doing well the market is bullish. Bull markets occur during times of high economic production, low unemployment and low inflation. Bear markets, on the other hand, follow downturns in the economy. When inflation and unemployment are rising, stock prices are usually falling.

Stock price fluctuations are also driven by supply and demand, which in turn are dependent to a great degree on investor psychology. Seeing a stock price rise rapidly can cause investors to jump on the bandwagon, and this rush to buy drives the price up even faster. A falling price can have a similar effect in the other direction. These are short-term fluctuations. Stock prices tend to normalize after such runs.

The Futures Market

A simple way to create 7 effective autoresponder messages

There is an old saying that the first ad rarely sells. You have to put your product, service, or idea in front of a prospect several times before she buys.

Autoresponders are designed specifically to get your message back to the same prospect over and over. That's why most autoresponder packages come in groups of 7 messages--from the 7 message marketing rule that has been the rule in advertising since our grandparents were in diapers.

But what do you say in your 7 messages? We've written autoresponder series for hundreds of customers. Here is one method that always works.

This method is called REMIND 'EM. People don't read your sales letter as carefully as you think. They tend to skim. They read the first message, but miss the second and third message. The prospect may not tune in again until message five. It's so easy for people to completely miss your main points intended to lead to a sale.

It's important to *repeat* your main message over and over. Say it once, twice, three times in your first message. Say your main message in a different way in the second message. Re-cap your main point again in the third message. That way, people who aren't paying attention still get your important ideas.

Here's an example of how the "remind 'em" formula works for a 7 letter series promoting personal security products.

Now start the middle section of messages. Note how they become more instructional telling people how to use the products.

Message (5) Protect yourself with Product B. Here's how to use it. Here's what happy customers say about it. Tell a hair raising story of how Product B saved a customer's life.

Now comes the wrap-up and reminder, especially important for people who never got around to reading your earlier messages.

Message (6) Go back to your main sales letter used in numbers 1 and 2. Start all over reviewing your main points and highlighting your most popular products.

Why this lawyer says you should buy car insurance from an independent broker

I don't sell car insurance, but as a lawyer practicing in the field of personal injury I frequently see people suffer because they have the wrong insurance coverage. Often, this happens because they purchased directly from an insurance company instead of an independent broker.

Many of my clients who have been seriously hurt in a car accident were struck by someone who had no insurance or only the minimum liability insurance coverage, which is $25,000 in New York and much less in many other states. Unfortunately, many of my clients were sold insurance policies with liability limits of $100,000 or $300,000, but were not sold matching uninsured and underinsured coverage.

Just this week, yet another new client had this problem. My client was a pedestrian crossing the street when she was struck by a car which fled the scene. The driver was caught shortly after leaving the accident, but the owner of the car only has the New York State minimum liability insurance of $25,000 and my client has serious injuries consisting of many broken bones including a fractured arm, leg and skull.

My client owns a car with liability insurance limits of $300,000, but she purchased the insurance from GEICO whose salesperson didn't sell her underinsured coverage. GEICO does not use independent insurance brokers, but sells insurance directly to consumers through in-house sales agents.

For a small fee, my client could have purchased underinsured coverage of $300,000 which would have allowed her to recover $300,000 for her injuries instead of $25,000. Ironically, she did not need the $300,000 liability coverage to protect her assets. However, since you cannot buy underinsured coverage higher than your liability coverage, I would have advised her to purchase $300,000 liability coverage for the sole purpose of being able to purchase $300,000 underinsured coverage.

I have had many clients in this situation who lost their jobs because of serious injuries and incurred substantial debt. If they had matching underinsured coverage, the additional money available to pay their claim would would be a big help to pay their bills and get their life back together.

Underinsured motorist coverage will pay you money from your own automobile insurance policy if you have been hurt in a car accident by someone who was negligent for causing your injury and who had less liability insurance coverage than you did. Uninsured motorist coverage will pay you when the other car did not have any insurance coverage or the identity of the other car is unknown.

Underinsured and uninsured coverage is inexpensive and usually available in limits that match your liability insurance coverage. It is not available in amounts greater than your liability insurance coverage.

Underinsured and uninsured coverage is so important that a couple of states now require coverage limits matching your liability insurance limits, unless you decline the coverage in writing. Several years ago, I suggested to several New York State senators that they enact a similar law in New York.

I have also seen many clients who were not sold the maximum medical payments insurance, which costs me only $2.01 per month on my car insurance policy. This is particularly important for people who do not have a good health insurance policy. It is also beneficial for passengers who do not have health insurance.

Why should you buy car insurance through an independent insurance broker? The courts have defined the reason. There have been several "malpractice" lawsuits against insurance companies for failure to offer underinsured and uninsured motorists coverage limits matching the liability limits. However, when the insurance company sells directly to consumers, these cases have gone in favor of the insurance companies. The courts found that when a consumer buys insurance directly from an insurance company, rather than an insurance broker, the consumer is only buying insurance and is not paying for advice.

When you buy auto insurance from an independent insurance broker who represents several different insurance companies, you get the advantage of an insurance professional who can evaluate your needs and advise you accordingly. Additionally, only an independent insurance broker can provide you with a choice of insurance companies and premiums, so you get the best coverage at the lowest price.

Whether you buy your car insurance directly from an insurance company or through an independent insurance broker, always make sure that you purchase matching uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage and the maximum medical payment benefits.

I experienced my own mid-life crisis at 33 and for the next 15 years transitioned from entrepreneur to college student to helpmate and homemaker to entrepreneur to unemployed to employed to unemployed to commissioned sales to employed to unemployed to NOW. Quite a circuitous route!

Yes a plan helps, but sometimes meeting our future takes a leap of faith. I started a blog as a leap of faith, and I wanted a career change. Did I know for a fact that there were thousands of men who might benefit from my experience in the trenches? No, but my senses told me that many men wished that they were better understood. Men often are misunderstood, lack support for their decisions, and go unnoticed for their contributions to family and community.

When I "retired" from the advertising world, I remembered thinking, "Now I know why men die after they retire." I lost my moorings. Even though closing my business was a conscious decision, I was so identified with a fast-paced, competitive world that I lost my sense of self.

Five years later, I launched a small-press publishing company and thought that I had finally found my calling. That venture aborted just on the cusp of major national exposure. It took me four years and a mental breakdown to recover.

But sometimes what we perceive to be a "breakdown" is really a "breakthrough."

What I've learned is that we can't control anything. I can't control a thing.
Think for a moment about Chinese handcuffs; the harder you pull, the stronger they bind you. The same is true with the mental and emotional confusion wrought from a breakdown. When we try to control our life, we will continue to muddle along. Instead, consider the possibility that by adapting to a new and changing reality, clarity and direction are yours for the asking.

The harder I pulled those handcuffs, the tighter they bound me to the old form. I couldn't let go, until my life circumstances forced me to.

Men don't have it easy in this world. Protecting and providing for your family, day in and day out, doesn't garner much media attention. How do you protect your family from the unseen? How do you provide when the "old" economy reneges on its promises? Or steals your financial future?

Let that be your anchor, not the "shoulds" of society or the expectation of others. Provide for and protect your family to the best of your ability. That's all that's required.

Wine has been around the world for over 7000 years and is made from just 2 basic ingredients, yeast and grape juice. By far the majority
of all wine is made from the juice of the grape, although some wines do use the skin, this mainly colour the wine( rose for example).

How is wine made?

Yeast is the main ingredient needed for fermentation yeast is what transforms the grapes into wine. Just as a point of intrest, there are actually wild yeast spores just beign carried all of the place by the wind and to make wine you just need an open container of grape juice patients and time.

There are a number of different strains of yeasts, numbering somewhere in 1000's and the types being used to make wine have been

So yeast is actually a living organism that feeds off of sugars in the grape juice in a process called fermentation.

When fermenting, yeast spores increase in numbers exponentially, this happens until the sugar content has been consumed.
During this fermentation process, the sugars are converted into alcohol and carbon dioxide.

There are various different flavors the yeast will lend to the finished wine product, the temperature when fermentation takes place,
the particular strain of yeast used s well as a few other things.

When all of the fermentable sugars have been exausted the yeast then falls to the bottom of the container where the fermentation process starts.
The wine is removed, leaving the yeast, and is trasferred to another container to mature to await bottling.
